Where should I start laying tiles?

If you are laying tiles for the first time, then you need to familiarize yourself with some important points:
  • where to start laying tiles;
  • on which surface should the tile be laid first: vertical or horizontal.

In this article we will tell you about it briefly and clearly.

Does tiling start with the floor or the walls?

There is no clear rule that concerns the surface from which you need to start laying tiles.

But most often the masters begin to lay decorative tile material from the floor, so we recommend you to act as well.

With this sequence, it is necessary to lay the floor tiles, rub the seams, wait for the glue and grout compositions to dry completely, and only then proceed to wall cladding. But during the second, to protect the tiles, it is necessary to cover the floor with a film. If you decide to start laying tiles from vertical surfaces, then there will be no need to protect the floor.

By the way, when finishing surfaces with tiles, all transitions are most often covered with curbs or baseboards that cover all possible disadvantages. Therefore, it is up to you to decide from which surface to start laying decorative material.

Where to start laying tiles?

Laying decorative material on the floor usually begins with the far corner (far entrance) of the surface, which we see immediately as we enter the room.

But if you are laying a tile with a complex pattern that needs to be selected, you need to work according to the following scheme:

  • Find the center of symmetry on the surface;
  • Lay out the tile without glue, picking up the pattern.

And only then you can mix the adhesive composition and start laying the lining material.

Laying decorative material on the walls also starts from the corner that we see first when we enter the room. The tile is laid from the bottom up, but not from the floor itself, but with a distance plus or minus equal to the size of 1 tile to obtain a perfectly smooth masonry. Therefore, you will need to install a rail on which you will be able to navigate from where the tile laying begins.

An important point: first you need to lay the whole tile, and only after, cut.
