What is impregnation for concrete and why is it needed

Concrete is a very durable and reliable building material, but with improper pouring or operation, it can also collapse. The vulnerable point of concrete is the pores. It is through them that moisture, chemicals or other elements that negatively affect the concrete can get into the concrete, thereby destroying it.

What is impregnation for concrete?

Impregnation for concrete is a special liquid hardener that penetrates into the pores of concrete and makes the surface more durable, wear–resistant, water-resistant and dust-free.

Also, with the help of impregnation, you can create a semi-gloss or semi-matte surface. Usually impregnations have neither color nor smell, so it is very comfortable to work with them. The material is suitable for strengthening concrete both outside and indoors.

What are the impregnations?

Impregnations are divided into organic and inorganic. The first are made on the basis of polymers, the second – on the basis of silicates. It is the second type of impregnation that makes the surface very durable and water-resistant, since they do not just penetrate into the pores and micropores of concrete, like polymer ones, but react with concrete at the molecular level.

If we talk about silicate impregnations, the most popular are impregnations based on sodium silicate and lithium silicate, which are very similar in their characteristics and applications.

We offer you to get acquainted in more detail with impregnations based on sodium silicate.

What are the advantages of sodium impregnation for concrete?

Consider the advantages of sodium impregnation for concrete based on the material Teknoser Sodyum, manufacturer Tekno. This is an imported material that has been conquering the Ukrainian market for several years.

The advantages of Teknoser Sodyum include:

  • improving the strength characteristics of the concrete floor
  • increasing the wear resistance of the surface
  • preventing concrete cracking
  • increasing the water resistance of the surface
  • exclusion of dust formation
  • preventing the destruction of the concrete surface even at very low temperatures.

In addition to strengthening the concrete surface, sodium impregnation is used as a finishing material, as it creates a beautiful glossy coating.

An important point: acid cleaners should not be used when washing a concrete surface coated with sodium impregnation.

What is the consumption of impregnation for sodium silicate-based concrete?

Depending on the quality of concrete and surface roughness, the impregnation consumption may vary. One liter of Teknoser Sodyum material can cover an area from 6 to 20 m2. The density of sodium impregnation is 1.20 g / cm2.
