What is topping
Topping is one of the types of hardeners for fresh concrete surfaces, which increases the strength properties of concrete floors by 1.5-2 times. Toppings are corundum and quartz. Also included in the toppings are:
- hydraulic binder
- special chemical additives
- polymer additives
- special coloring pigment
Instructions for applying topping for concrete floors
Manufacturers recommend applying topping in two layers, but it is possible to make changes depending on the intensity of surface operation in the future. It is not recommended to use the material in windy and rainy weather.
Topping for concrete floors is applied by the "dry-on-wet" method with special grout machines on a screed with a strength from C20-C25.
1. Sprinkle dry topping on freshly laid concrete.
2. When the material absorbs moisture from the concrete and darkens, you can start grout, as this means that it is bonded to the concrete.
3. For grout, it is necessary to use a special grout machine. You need to rub it very carefully and evenly so as not to leave holes on the surface. Otherwise, you will have to redo all the work again.
Attention: if you have not previously rubbed dry topping, do not try to do it yourself. The articles you've read and the videos you've watched won't help you. You need to learn by practice. Believe me, if you hire a master who will either do the topping himself or control your work, you will save many times more. Because the cases of "I will save and spend topping myself" lead to the redoing of all the work completely and spending much larger amounts.
4. When grouting the topping, pay special attention to the corners of the floor.
5. After completion of work with topping, it is recommended to protect the surface from premature loss of moisture and the formation of shrinkage cracks. To do this, you can cover the concrete floor with the Teknokur 100 membrane forming agent, which also performs an additional protective function of the concrete base.
6. Next, wait for the concrete to harden (from 1 to 3 days) and cut the concrete surface into squares measuring 4x4m. This will prevent the surface from cracking in the future. The seams should be filled with a sealant, for example, Teknopoliderz 1K or Teknopoliderz 2K.
The durable wear-resistant surface will be ready for high-intensity operations in 28 days, when the concrete gains full strength characteristics.
What is the consumption of corundum topping?
The consumption of corundum topping is 2-4 kg /m2 when applied in 1 layer. For better hardening of the concrete floor, it is recommended to apply topping in 2 layers.
