Waterproofing materials for a concrete pool: what do you need and how to choose?

Waterproofing occupies a very important place during repair and construction work. And as for the rooms whose surfaces are in constant contact with water, it is simply impossible to do without waterproofing materials during their construction.

In this article we would like to talk about materials for waterproofing pools and their extreme necessity.

Why is it necessary to waterproofing a concrete pool?
Speaking of a concrete pool, it is necessary to imagine a large bowl that is located in the ground and is influenced from all sides: from the inside – by the water from the pool itself, from the outside – by groundwater.

Concrete is a high–strength building material, but it does not differ in its water resistance, which is why, without the use of waterproofing materials, its destruction under the constant influence of water occurs very, very quickly. The water will penetrate into the pores of the concrete walls of the pool and gradually destroy them. And over time, many cracks form, through which the water will very quickly begin to leave the pool, thereby causing a lot of trouble to the owner.

Therefore, in order for the concrete pool to last not 1-2 years, but many, many decades, it is necessary to perform all the necessary stages of work, including waterproofing.

What materials are needed for waterproofing the pool?
The following materials are required for waterproofing the pool:
  • Waterproofing mixture
It is best to choose a coating waterproofing mixture, for example, Teknomer 200 EX Crystallized.
A mandatory requirement is the elasticity of the material, since after pouring the concrete bowl, it will shrink due to its multi-ton weight. And when any concrete structure shrinks, the inelastic material used gives cracks through which moisture gets to the concrete itself, and the waterproofing ceases to have any protective abilities.
In addition to elasticity, the material must be resistant to both positive and negative effects of moisture, so that it protects concrete from both pool water and groundwater.
  • Penetrating waterproofing
This material can be used before applying the main waterproofing layer.
Penetrating waterproofing is partially similar in its properties to a primer. It penetrates into the pores and micropores of concrete, covering them with insoluble crystals that are in the composition of the material, thus protecting the surface from the influence of water.

There are a lot of nuances in the construction of swimming pools, but as for the materials for waterproofing the pool, the main recommendations are the purchase of high-quality and suitable compositions.
