How to choose a varnish for concrete

Both concrete and any other mineral surfaces must be protected and strengthened immediately after their solidification, thus increasing their service life. Nowadays, there are hundreds of types of concrete hardeners, but the choice of masters very often falls on the varnish. Why? Let's figure it out.

What kind of varnish should concrete be reinforced with and why?

Concrete is a strong and durable material. And provided that the correct technique of working with the concrete mixture is followed, including its strengthening after solidification, it can last for many years.

Acrylic varnish is often used to strengthen concrete, since the material performs two functions at once:

  • Surface reinforcement
  • Giving a beautiful glossy or matte appearance to the surface

In addition, acrylic varnish is much more effective than a conventional membrane-forming agent, which, unfortunately, is very often sold in our market as a varnish for concrete.

For example, the Turkish-made Teknocila 350 varnish is considered a high-quality acrylic-based concrete hardener, which significantly increases the service life of concrete structures, and it can be applied both on vertical and horizontal mineral surfaces.

What are the features of Teknocila 350 acrylic concrete varnish?

One-component ready-to-use acrylic varnish for concrete surfaces Teknocila 350 can be applied both on bare concrete and on plastered surfaces and on surfaces reinforced with dry topping.

Among the main features of the material are:

  • Increasing the wear resistance of concrete
  • Preventing the formation of cracks in concrete due to temperature changes
  • Prevention of concrete dusting
  • Protection from the influence of moisture
  • Protection from the influence of any precipitation that penetrates unprotected concrete in the form of salts and gases
  • Protection from the effects of UV radiation
  • Protection of the surface from burnout or discoloration due to precipitation and UV radiation.

How not to make a mistake when choosing a high-quality varnish for concrete?

Concrete varnish is a colorless liquid, the thickness of the layer of which after drying is on average 135 microns.

The varnish can be applied either with a brush or roller, or with a spray gun. In this case, the flow rate will differ by approximately 0.050 l/m2.

One should not rely on the low price of the material, since manufacturers often sell curing or membrane forming agent, which are 2 times cheaper, in order to increase sales instead of varnish. They look quite similar, but the properties and effectiveness of the materials differ significantly.

Also pay attention to the certificates and standards of materials. A high-quality acrylic varnish must meet the ASTM O 309-81 standard.
